The Eee Box is ASUS’ solution for consumers looking for a “low cost” desktop. The Eee Box is the desktop brother of the Eee PC. In a nutshell, the Eee Box feature a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor paired with an Intel 945G chipset, 1GB of DDR2-667 memory (a single SO-DIMM module is installed), a 160GB Seagate Momentus 5400.4 2.5″ SATA hard drive, built in Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n wireless and Bluetooth. The only two outputs are the DC power and DVI out to your monitor. Since the Eee Box is roughly the size of the Apple TV, which is super compact, it does not have an optical drive.

The ASUS Eee Box isn’t going to be for everyone nor is it going to be a speed demo,n but it’s good enough for basic tasks such as web surfing, email, basic office work, YouTube, and decode DivX/Xvid. The ASUS motherboards allows the Eee Box to boot into Express Gate (splashtop) which gives you instant access to IM (via Pidgin), Skype, a web browser or a photo browser. Early review units come installed with Windows XP, which should be a much better option than Vista.
The cost of the Eee Box will be announced on June 3, 2008 at Computex.
